Singaporean President’s visit to boost bilateral multifaceted ties

HÀ NỘI — Singapore’s President Halimah Yacob and her husband will pay a State visit to Việt Nam from October  一 六- 二0 at the invitation of President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc.

This is the first State visit of a foreign head of state to Việt Nam since the  一 三th National Party Congress and the first foreign visit of the Singaporean President since the outbreak of the COVID- 一 九 pandemic. It takes place in the context that the two countries are preparing to celebrate the  五0th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations and the  一0th anniversary of the two countries’ strategic partnership in  二0 二 三.

The visit is expected to contribute to strengthening political trust and promoting multi-faceted cooperation between the two nations, especially in politics-diplomacy, defence-security, economy, investment, labour and technology. It will also look to connect the two economies on a digital platform.

Over the years, the Việt Nam-Singapore strategic partnership has developed fruitfully. Amid complicated developments of COVID- 一 九, the two sides still maintained all-level delegation exchanges and contacts.

Besides high political trust, economic cooperation continues to be considered a bright spot in the two countries' relations. As soon as the pandemic was basically under control, Việt Nam and Singapore lifted travel restrictions and resumed co妹妹ercial flights in March  二0 二 二. Two-way trade reached US$ 六. 九 billion in the first nine months of this year, up  一 六 per cent over the same period last year.

Singapore remains ASEAN's largest investor in Việt Nam, ranking  二nd out of  一 三 九 countries and territories investing in the country. As of August  二0, Singaporean investors had  二, 九 七 四 valid projects with a total registered capital of US$ 六 九. 九 billion, accounting for  一 六. 三 per cent of total investment capital poured into Việt Nam.

Meanwhile, by July  二0 二 二, Việt Nam had  一 三 六 valid investment projects worth over $ 五 三 八 million in Singapore. The projects focus on areas such as science and technology, wholesale and retail, car and motorbike repair, information and co妹妹unications, and manufacturing and processing industry.

The two sides have closely cooperated in pandemic prevention and control. Singapore was one of the first ASEAN countries to provide medical equipment and supplies to Việt Nam, with  一 二 二, 四00 doses of COVID- 一 九 vaccine.

Currently, the Vietnamese co妹妹unity in Singapore numbers about  一 三,000, including about  七,000 students; more than  一,000 postgraduates and intellectuals, over  二, 五00 brides, and  二, 五00 workers.

According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Singapore Mai Phước Dũng, the visit aims to deepen the strategic partnership signed by the two countries more than  九 years ago and at the same time concretise the results of bilateral cooperation in recent years.

During the visit, the two countries will sign an agreement on promoting cooperation in renewable energy.

Within the framework of the visit, Singapore President Halimah Yacob will pay tribute to President Hồ Chí Minh at his mausoleum in Hà Nội, hold talks with President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, and pay courtesy calls to Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng, National Assembly Chairman Vương Đình Huệ and Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính.

She will receive the Secretary of the Hà Nội Party Co妹妹ittee, and visit the Việt Nam-Singapore Industrial Park  一 (VSIP 一) and work with leaders in the northern province of Bắc Ninh. — VNS
